Wrought Iron Fence Types for Hesperia Homes

Tubular Steel Picket Fences
This is what most quotes mean by "wrought iron": square steel tubing welded into panels, with straight pickets and at least two horizontal rails, then coated black. A galvanized version adds a zinc layer under the paint, which costs a bit more and protects against rust.
- Plain black: $50 to $60 a linear foot installed
- Galvanized: $60 to $65 a linear foot installed
- Labor share: about $15 to $25 a linear foot

Solid Wrought Iron (Forged) Fences
True wrought iron is about 99% iron, heated and shaped by hand, and only a blacksmith makes it. Hand work makes it slower to order, and it resists rust better than mass-produced mild steel. Twisted pickets and scrolls can be done in steel too, so ask which one you're being quoted.
- Ornamental designs: $65 to $85 a linear foot installed
- Custom-designed ornamental: $85 to $130 a linear foot

Iron Panels on Block Walls
Iron on top of a low block wall or between block columns gives a solid base with an open view above it. The block base and columns are masonry work under a different license, covered on the block wall installation page. The iron installer then fits the panels to the columns.
- Iron panels: about $50 to $85 a linear foot installed
- A brick column or pillar: $500 to $1,800 each

Privacy Panel or Slat Inserts for Iron
An iron fence gives no privacy on its own. Bamboo screens, decorative slats or a hedge behind it are the usual fixes. Screening also turns the fence into a solid surface for wind, so ask whether the posts need upsizing first.
- Slatted ornamental frame (aluminum, for comparison): $75 to $110 a linear foot installed

Walk Gates in Iron
A walk gate is built to match the fence and hangs on posts set in concrete. Driveway and RV gates are a separate job with their own hardware (driveway gates). A gate in a pool barrier has its own latch and closing rules, listed on the pool fence page.
- Iron gate: $200 to $650 for materials alone

Iron Fence Prices by Height and Finish
HomeGuide's national figures for installed iron fencing, by height:
| Height | Per linear foot installed |
|---|---|
| 3 ft | $40-$50 |
| 4 ft | $50-$65 |
| 5 ft | $65-$75 |
| 6 ft | $75-$85 |

Bars and pickets
the cheapest panels have two horizontal rails; heavier ones have four or more, and closer pickets use more steelPosts
heavy iron needs posts set in concreteSlope and rock

each one is priced separatelyOld fence
tear-out is its own line (fence removal)
Worked example (our arithmetic): 120 feet of 5-foot fence at $65 to $75 a foot is $7,800 to $9,000, before a walk gate.
Installation Steps and Upkeep
National guides put most fence installs at 2 to 4 days, with 1 to 4 days for post concrete to cure.
- 1
Measure and check the yard rules
(below), especially for anything in the front setback. - 2
Mark utilities
before post holes go in (811 and DigAlert). - 3
Set posts
in concrete and let them cure. - 4
Hang panels and gates
, then check the gate swing and latch. - 5
Touch up
every cut or weld so bare steel isn't left exposed.
Upkeep is paint. Guides suggest cleaning, removing rust and repainting about once a year; hiring it out runs $5 to $12 a linear foot.
